To meet the social and environmental needs, Menchi decided to invest in sustainability, setting as objectives the reduction of the environmental impact of the company and respect for workers rights. To better explain its intentions, Menchi has drafted the sustainability policy paper.
GRS (Global Recycle Standard)
The GRS certification certifies the percentage of recycled fibres within each production batch. The Global Recycle Standard ensures that fabrics contain at least 20% recycled material and it checks that social and environmental standards are respected at every stage of the production process. Menchi has been certified since 2017 and in addition to the purchased GRS material, it also uses GRS fibres from internal waste recovery.
RWS (Responsible Wool Standard)
An increasing interest in animal welfare has led Menchi to obtain a certification that protects the welfare of the sheep and the land on which they graze. RWS attests, in fact, the origin of wool from responsible farms and certifies every stage of the production process, from breeding to the finished product. It also guarantees the presence of at least 5% RWS wool in the fabrics.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
To ensure an increasingly sustainable product, Menchi is committed to also obtain the GOTS certification that ensures that our fabrics contain at least 70% of natural fibers from organic farming. In addition, it ensures that individual requirements are met at each stage of the production process.
Cardato recycled is a certification that comes from the market need to use recycled cashmere. The Chamber of Commerce of Prato decided to create this certification and Menchi joined the project in 2017. This certification is measurable and includes:
- the production of fabrics made of at least 65% recycled material;
- the measurement of the environmental impact of the entire production cycle;
- the measurement of the difference in impact between virgin and recycled material;
- collaboration with local companies, reducing pollution due to travel.
The “cardato recycled” fabric is therefore produced at Km 0.
BCI (Better Cotton Initiative)
The Better Cotton Initiative encourages textile companies to buy cotton from plantations considered sustainable both from an environmental and social point of view. BCI farmers, following the Better Cotton Standard, produce cotton in total respect for the environment, minimizing water waste and the use of fertilizers and pesticides. Menchi has been supporting this project since 2020 with the aim of becoming more and more sustainable.
