FAMILY 04

WOOL

The mother fiber.
The starting point of every great fabric.

The fiber

Wool:
where it all begins

Wool is the fiber that founded Prato and built the reputation of Italian textiles worldwide. Menchi was born from wool—it is the mother fiber, the starting point of every research, the reference against which all other noble fibers are measured.

The Menchi Wool family comprises a wide range of articles: from Australian Merino virgin wool (fineness 17–21 micron) to classic British wool tweeds, from technical fabrics for sportswear outerwear to the great classics of the double-breasted coat. Each article is the result of decades of experience in processing the world’s most versatile fiber.

Menchi wool is also the foundation of great blends: cashmere-wool, alpaca-wool, camel-wool. Wool is the supporting structure upon which noble fibers express their finest qualities.

Why choose it

The qualities of Menchi wool

Absolute versatility

Wool is the world’s most versatile fiber: it can be woven smooth or bouclé, lightweight or heavy, structured or soft. The Menchi Wool family covers every outerwear requirement.

Natural elasticity

Wool fiber has a natural elastic memory: the fabric recovers its shape after use, resists creasing, and maintains the garment’s silhouette over time.

Excellent dyeing

Wool absorbs dyes uniformly and deeply. Colors on Menchi wool are brilliant, deep, and resistant: they do not fade over time or with washing.

Natural sustainability

Wool is 100% biodegradable, renewable, and traceable. Menchi favors RWS-certified wool (Responsible Wool Standard) to ensure animal welfare throughout the entire supply chain.

From raw to fabric

How a Menchi
wool fabric is born

01

Fleece selection

Wool is selected for fineness, length, and origin. Menchi favors RWS-certified Australian Merino wool for high-end fabrics, and British wool for classic tweeds.

02

Carding and combing

Carding produces soft and voluminous yarns for warm and enveloping fabrics. Combing produces smooth and compact yarns for elegant and structured fabrics. Menchi uses both techniques.

03

Weaving

Wool lends itself to every type of weave: plain, twill, satin, panama, bouclé. The choice of weave determines the structure, weight, and hand of the final fabric.

04

Fulling and finishing

Fulling is the process that compacts and softens wool, giving it its characteristic hand. Menchi has developed specific fulling cycles for each article, refined over decades.
